City celebrates Arbor Day, academy founding

Kendallville Mayor Suzanne Handshoe, city officials, Tree Commission members, Freedom Academy board members and representatives, East Noble High School Assistant Principal Kathryn Logenbaugh and Erica Dekko, daughter of the late Chet Dekko, gather Friday in Bixler Lake Park to plant a red maple tree celebrating Arbor Day in Kendallville and the 25th anniversary of the Freedom Academy. Tree Commission President Dave Christianson spoke about Arbor Day and the city’s Tree City USA designation by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Freedom Academy Executive Director Melissa Carpenter explained Freedom Academy, established in 1991 by Chet Dekko.
