Freedom Academy Expands Programs and Strengthens Mission to Meet Workforce Needs
KENDALLVILLE, Ind. — Freedom Academy is advancing its next phase of growth with expanded programming, a renewed mission, and strategic investments to better serve employers and adult learners across northeast Indiana. Their mission is to enhance economic freedom for those willing to enrich their education.
Under the leadership of Anita Shepherd, the organization is building on its foundation in workforce training while evolving to meet the demands of a changing economy. With a background in leadership, workforce, and economic development, Shepherd brings a focus on practical skill-building and meaningful impact.
Founded in 1991 with an emphasis on workforce skill development and training, Freedom Academy now offers a broader range of programs, including leadership, communication, and professional development, alongside nationally recognized certifications in healthcare, welding, CNC, robotics, and industry 4.0 and 5.0.
“When we work with employers, we’re not just delivering training—we’re helping build a support system that allows employees to overcome barriers and advance their careers,” Shepherd said.
Freedom Academy’s approach centers on real-world application, hands-on instruction, and collaboration with subject matter experts. Programs are designed to align with current workforce needs while recognizing the realities adult learners face.
“We serve adults balancing work, family, and life,” Shepherd said. “Gaining new skills builds confidence, not just credentials.”
The organization’s updated mission reflects its commitment to expanding economic opportunity through skill development. This impact extends beyond individuals, helping employers strengthen their workforce and improve retention.
Recent internal developments support this direction. Freedom Academy has welcomed new team members, promoted other team members, strengthened governance practices, and implemented updated systems and technology to support long-term growth.
Freedom Academy continues to partner with employers to deliver customized training solutions that address skills gaps and evolving job requirements. These collaborations are key to strengthening the regional workforce.
“We’ve built strong partnerships that allow us to expand our reach and deliver greater impact,” Shepherd said.
Serving 12 counties across northeast Indiana, Freedom Academy works with employers, career technical education (CTE) facilities, and community organizations to provide accessible, affordable, flexible training programs. Most courses are 12 weeks or less.
As workforce demands shift with technology, Freedom Academy is focused on helping both employers and employees adapt.
